Advertising & Sponsorship

What we sell, how it is labelled, and what we will not run at any price.

Who you are reaching

Every subscriber has to pass the same three-part test the newsroom scopes its coverage by.

  1. Does the business sell security, buy it at scale, or finance the companies that do?
  2. Is the reader responsible for a budget, a P&L or an investment decision?
  3. Would this reader act on a story about security spending, regulation, capital or vendor pricing?

All three yes, or out.

This is the whole proposition. We are not selling you a large audience of people interested in security; we are selling you a smaller one that signs purchase orders. The reasoning is on the about page, and we would rather you read it before buying than after.

What we sell

Patch Notes sponsorship, display advertising, lead generation programmes, sponsored research, webinars, press release placement, and event sponsorship and exhibit space. Rates on request — see Contact.

Labelling

Every commercial placement is labelled. Sponsored articles carry a SPONSORED label above the fold, visually distinct from editorial, and are never attributed to an editorial byline. Outbound links in commercial material carry rel=”sponsored”. Press releases live in a separate section, marked as unedited company material and excluded from search indexing.

We do not sell links, do not sell “editorial-style” placements that look like our reporting, and do not allow advertisers to approve, preview or influence editorial coverage.

Claims we will not run

Security buyers are told a lot of things. We hold advertising on this site to a simple standard: if a buyer cannot check it, we will not print it.

We will not run advertising that makes:

  • Claims to stop, block or prevent “100%” of anything, or to make an organisation “unhackable”;
  • Unnamed “leading analyst” or “independent test” claims without a citation to the test itself;
  • Fear-based copy that names a real breach victim without their consent;
  • Comparative claims about a named competitor that you cannot substantiate in writing.

We ask advertisers making a performance or comparative claim to supply their substantiation in writing before the campaign runs. We keep it on file. This protects both of us.

Press releases

We accept paid press release placement. Releases are labelled as unedited company material, with search indexing disabled. They are not reviewed, fact-checked or endorsed by our newsroom, and running one earns no editorial coverage. The claims standards above apply to press releases exactly as they apply to display advertising. See Submit a release.

The firewall

Our commercial team does not see stories before publication and cannot request, delay or kill coverage. Our editorial team does not know who is in the pipeline. Where we cover a company that is a customer, sponsor or event partner, we disclose it in the story.
